Welcome to the South Fork Band, one of the four integral communities that comprise the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone Indians. Located in the picturesque high desert terrain of northeastern Nevada, the South Fork Reservation spans approximately 13,050 acres, 28 miles south of Elko, and nestled in the foothills of the majestic Ruby Mountains.
The reservation, established by Executive Order in 1941 under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, was built from initial land purchases between 1937 and 1939. Today, it stands as a testament to the resilience and rich cultural heritage of our people.
Our Heritage and Community
Our community is deeply rooted in the Western Shoshone traditions, having been one of the groups that chose to remain in the South Fork area rather than relocate to Duck Valley. We have proudly maintained our presence in this region for generations, safeguarding our cultural heritage and way of life.
The South Fork Reservation is a thriving community that honors its past while looking toward a future of sustainable growth and development.
Agriculture and Livestock
Agriculture plays a pivotal role in our economy and lifestyle. We currently cultivate 2,800 acres of land, primarily producing hay to sustain our livestock herd of over 700, consisting of cattle and horses.
Cattle-raising is a vital economic activity and serves as the second-largest source of income for the tribe, following federal contracts.
Community and Infrastructure
The heart of our community is the South Fork Band Community Center, which houses the tribal administration. While healthcare services are provided by the Indian Health Services, we are continually working to improve local infrastructure and facilities for the benefit of our residents.
We have 45 residences on the reservation, with utilities like electricity and water sourced locally. Despite the challenges of our remote location, we are committed to enhancing the quality of life for our people through ongoing infrastructure and economic development projects.
Economic Development and Future Projects
Our vision for the future includes various economic development projects to create a sustainable and prosperous community. We are currently planning the establishment of a tribal store, the expansion of our livestock herd, and the development of a camping and RV area.
Additionally, the potential for a commercial hunting and fishing industry and the development of recreational facilities are being explored to harness the natural beauty and resources of our reservation.
Governance and Leadership
The South Fork Reservation operates under the governance of the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone Indians, with our own seven-member council managing local affairs.
Our constitution and by-laws, ratified in 1982, guide us in preserving our sovereignty and ensuring the well-being of our community.
A Promising Future
As we look to the future, we are focused on economic diversification, infrastructure development, and the preservation of our rich cultural heritage. With a strong commitment to our land and people, the South Fork Band continues to strive for a future that honors our past while embracing new opportunities for growth and prosperity.
